China, Uzbekistan to Speed up Railway Project

20 August 2014

A five-year development plan for furthering the China-Uzbekistan partnership has been signed.

This follows a meeting between the presidents of the two countries in Beijing.

"Both sides have agreed to strengthen cooperation in energy, commerce, finance, investment, agriculture and transportation. There are also agreements to ensure the building of line-D of the China-Central Asia natural gas pipeline and to develop the Silk Road economic belt," Chinese President Xi Jinping said.

The two sides have also agreed to speed up a railway project linking China, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.

Uzbekistan President Islam Karimov, who is on a two-day state visit to China, says much has been accomplished.

"We have signed a total of 22 cooperation agreements. The total value of the deals signed today has reached 5.2 billion US dollars. Adding the trade agreement and the total value of deals signed during this visit has reached more than 6 billion US dollars."

President Karimov expressed appreciation over China's policies in developing friendship and win-win cooperation with Central Asian countries, vowing to back China's proposals on the Silk Road economic belt and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.

The two sides have also agreed to strengthen coordination within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
