IAEA Director General, Uzbek Energy Minister discuss nuke plant project

12 February 2020

Minister of Energy of Uzbekistan Alisher Sultanov met International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the International Conference on Nuclear Security on February 10-14 in Vienna, the Ministry of Energy said.

The issues related to further expansion of cooperation were discussed.

IAEA sees Uzbekistan as an important partner in the region, Rafael Mariano Grossi said.

He expressed readiness of IAEA to provide all possible support in nuclear security and construction of the nuclear power plant.

Grossi emphasized importance of a regulator for the nuclear security and said it is necessary to pay a serious attention to capacity building of the regulator. He said one of the IAEA missions is Integrated Regulatory Review Service. It will help Uzbekistan strengthen and enhance the effectiveness of its regulatory infrastructure for nuclear, radiation, radioactive waste and transport safety. The IRRS regulatory review process provides a peer review of both regulatory technical and policy issues and is suitable for any state, regardless of the level of development of its activities and practices that involve ionizing radiation or a nuclear programme.
