President of Uzbekistan approves framework agreement with EBRD

On 21 June 2017, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev approved a framework agreement between the Republic of Uzbekistan and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development on holding operation on Ecological Rehabilitation Account for Central Asia in Uzbekistan. The document was signed in Tashkent on 16 March 2017 during the visit of the EBRD delegation headed by President Suma Chakrabarti. Uzbek leader determined the State Inspectorate for Supervision of Geological Exploration of Subsoil, Safe Management of Work in Industry, Mining and Public Utilities Sector under the Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan as the competent body responsible for the implementation of the international treaty. |read|

Uralmashzavod to supply mining equipment to Uzbekistan

Russia’s Uralmashzavod (UZTM) plans to sign a contract for supply of mining equipment with the Navoi Mining and Smelting Combine (NGMK), the press service of UZTM said. According to the Russian company, NGMK plans to purchase an excavator ECG-5A. Mikhail Gunitsev, director of the mining equipment division of Uralmashzavod, told Nakanee. |read|

A delegation of the Microsoft Corporation headed by director for business development in CIS Irina Volk held talks at the Ministry of Information Technologies and Communications of Uzbekistan on 20 June 2017. According to the Ministry, the parties exchanged views on further plans of Microsoft to expand activities in Uzbekistan in the field of information and communication technologies. FRDU to acquire shares of Agrobank for US$30 million

Fund for Reconstruction and Development of Uzbekistan (FRDU) will acquire shares of the joint-stock commercial bank Agrobank for US$30 million in 2017. The Government of Uzbekistan adopted a resolution “On measures to expand production and introduction of biogas plants in the republic for the period 2017-2019”. According to the resolution, the FRDU will acquire shares of Agrobank worth US$30 million. |read|

Uzbekistan to replace traditional fuels with renewable energy sources in power production

The government of Uzbekistan has approved a program of measures for advanced development of renewable energy and increase in the energy efficiency of the economy and social sector for 2017-2021, the Jahon information agency reported. The document is aimed at meeting several key tasks. First of all, its implementation will allow diversifying fuel balance through renewable energy sources (RES), by replacing traditional fuels with RES and reducing the share of traditional fuels (coal and natural gas) in the production of electricity and heat. |read|

Uzbekistan plans US$2.65 billion for hydropower new development and rehabilitation

One of five Central Asian Republics, Uzbekistan, through a decree this month from Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, said it will invest about US$2.65 billion in hydropower development from 2017-2025. The decree is published in the national database of the Uzbek legislation and indicates the country plans to develop 18 new hydropower projects and modernize 14 existing plants. |read|

New chairman in Uzbekistan’s Uzbekenergo company

Fazliddin Salomov has been dismissed from the post of chairman of the board of Uzbekenergo JSC, an energy company in Uzbekistan, by the decree of the country’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, a source in the company told Trend. Ulugbek Mustafaev has been appointed new chairman of the energy company. Fazliddin Salomov, who held this post since September 2016, was dismissed due to shortcomings in resolving the issues related to the reduction of accounts receivable for the supply of electricity in the Uzbek domestic market. |read|

Mirziyoyev calls for measures to build Uzbeks’ trust in judicial system

President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev called for taking measures to strengthen the people's confidence in the country’s judicial system, Uzbekistan National News Agency (UzA) reported. The president criticized the cases of corruption, indifference to the people’s concerns and making decisions that violate the principles of justice. Considerable part of complaints lately coming from citizens have had to do with the activity of courts and judges, and this points to the presence of numerous problems in this sphere, he noted. |read|

Uzbekistan offers 29 mineral deposits to foreign investors

8 June 2017
Uzbekistan has offered 29 deposits of strategically important solid minerals, including 12 gold deposits to foreign investors for industrial development. The investors were also invited to develop eight deposits of tungsten and three deposits of uranium, iron and lithium, each, in accordance with the Uzbek government’s decree. In addition, potential foreign investors were invited to participate in the geological study of 111 sites prospective for noble, colored, black and rare earth elements. |read|

European Investment Bank plans to enter Uzbekistan market

7 June 2017
The Central Bank of Uzbekistan has received a delegation of the European Investment Bank (EIB) to discuss prospects and investment potential of Uzbekistan's cooperation with the EU bank, including the allocation of credit lines to Uzbek commercial banks for financing projects of small business and entrepreneurship, the Jahon information agency reported. The EIB delegation was headed by the Bank’s Vice-President Vazil Hudak. The EIB adheres to the principles of "responsible lending", which means providing funding only to those projects and borrowers that meet stringent environmental, social and other requirements of the EU, as well as "zero tolerance" against prohibited business practices. |read|

Uzbekistan senate appoints Nurmuratov new central bank chairman

Uzbekistan's upper chamber of parliament said on Tuesday it has appointed Mamarizo Nurmuratov new central bank chairman. Uzbekistan, Turkey sign deals worth $2B

A set of documents and agreements was signed in Tashkent on May 25 following a meeting of the Uzbekistan-Turkey Intergovernmental Commission for Trade and Economic Cooperation and the Uzbekistan-Turkey business forum. The documents and agreements, worth more than $2 billion, envisage the implementation of around 30 projects in pharmaceutics, textile industry, electro-technical, construction and banking sectors. Uzbekistan reaches out for renewed cooperation with EBRD

Sodiq Safoyev, First Deputy Speaker of the Senate of Parliament of Uzbekistan and European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) Governor for Uzbekistan, spoke about the country’s strategic reform program at the EBRD 2017 Annual Meeting in Cyprus. He stressed the importance of regional integration and highlighted Uzbekistan’s potential for growth, the EBRD Press Office reported on May 10. “The EBRD is back [in Uzbekistan] and we’re renewing, starting a new page of our cooperation,” Safoyev said. |read|

Business ombudsman institution set up in Uzbekistan

Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev by his decree has established an institution of the authorized representative (ombudsman) for the protection of rights and legal interests of business entities under the country’s president, the Uzbekistan National News Agency (UzA) reported. The main tasks and activity directions of the business ombudsman are to participate in the formation and implementation of Uzbek state policy in the field of entrepreneurship development, protect the rights and interests of entrepreneurs, implement control over observance of their rights and interests by state bodies, including law enforcement and controlling bodies, according to the decree. The business ombudsman will also render legal support to entrepreneurs while auditing their activity, as well as evaluate the impact of the adopted normative legal acts on entrepreneurial activity and prepare proposals for improving legislation. |read|
